If you consider the size of your feet relative to all that they do in supporting your body, enabling mobility, and providing balance, you begin to understand why a small structural problem can have such a large impact. To restore balance and relieve pain, custom orthotics are effective tools that Tekchand Thakurdial, DPM, routinely recommends to help patients at Dr. Tek Footcare function optimally. To explore whether orthotics are right for you, call the Staten Island, New York, office or request an appointment using the online scheduling tool.
Orthotics Q & A
What are orthotics?
Orthotics are inserts that are custom made to fit your feet to resolve a problem with alignment, support, performance, or structure. Your feet are amazingly small and incredibly complex structures in which every component plays a critical role in supporting your body, providing mobility, and promoting balance.
Any problem, no matter how small, has the potential to throw this delicate network off balance, which can have an effect not only in your feet, but on up into your knees, hips, and even your back.
With orthotics, Dr. Tek is able to restore balance by spreading the workload more evenly and taking the pressure off of areas that may be compromised.
Why would I need orthotics?
There are dozens of reasons why you may benefit from orthotics, including:
- Flat feet or high arch foot malalignment
- Running injuries or pain
- Bursitis
- Diabetic foot
- Plantar fasciitis
- Heel spur syndrome
- Bunions
- Neuromas
- Achilles tendonitis
- Shin splints
- Tarsal tunnel syndrome
- Metatarsalgia or pain under the ball of your foot
- Posterior tibial tendonitis
In fact, most issues that affect your feet can benefit from a good orthotic. Going beyond remedying a specific issue, some people turn to orthotics to proactively prevent foot and ankle problems and improve performance, making orthotics a great preventive tool.
What is the process for getting orthotics?
If you and Dr. Tek decide that you may benefit from orthotics, the doctor first casts a mold of your feet. Dr. Tek then sends these molds off to a lab for custom manufacture of your orthotics, along with any specific instructions that address your unique needs.
When your orthotics are completed, you return to Dr. Tek Footcare for your final fitting. During this visit, Dr. Tek ensures that the orthotics fit your feet, and he makes any necessary tweaks to ensure that you get the full benefits of these devices.
For example, if you’re struggling with bursitis, Dr. Tek may hollow out a certain area to take the pressure off of your inflamed bursa sac. Or, if you have a problem with pronation, Dr. Tek makes sure that the orthotics sufficiently correct your gait.
